The Do’s And Don’ts Of Summer Make-Up

If you’re anything like us, summer is a time of make-up mayhem! The rising temperature and humid climate means that our usual make-up application just won’t cut it – we’ve got foundation slipping off our foreheads and panda eyes by lunchtime! Thankfully, there are a few do’s and don’ts that you can follow to help your make-up last…

DON’T START WITH A MOISTURISER

In the winter months, there might be nothing better than slathering on a rich face cream to inject a little moisture into your skin before applying your make-up. Stop! A lightweight serum like Wild About Beauty’s Rose Water Illuminating Serum brightens a lacklustre complexion and creates a glowy base for your make-up without weighing your skin down. Simply apply a few pumps to clean skin, leave it to set for a few minutes, then start your make-up!

DO APPLY A PRIMER

Unless you have the skin of a goddess, chances are a humid climate is your complexions number one enemy! To combat it, be sure to prep your skin with a primer. Laura Geller’s Spackle® is packed with anti-oxidant busting ingredients like white tea to ward off environmental damage while smoothing over fine lines, bumps and dry patches – creating a perfect base for your carefully applied make-up to adhere to.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SPF

Of course, we’re committed to wearing sunscreen every day but when summer arrives it’s even more important not to miss this step! Benefit Dream Screen is ideal when rocking your favourite summer make-up as not only will it protect your skin with broad spectrum SPF 45, but it leaves behind a silky-matte finish which is just perfect for layering underneath your foundation.

DO GO FOR A LIGHTER BASE

Even if you’re a high-coverage foundation girl at heart, opting for something a little more lightweight in the summer months is your best bet if you want to avoid your products slip-and-sliding around your face throughout the day. A tinted moisturiser like Caudalie’s Vinoperfect Radiance masks blemishes and redness, is packed with good-for-your skin ingredients, and it’s oil free to help those T-zones stay shine-free all day.

DON’T DENY YOURSELF A SMOKEY EYE

You might think that you can’t rock a smokey eye during the summer – but we think, why not?! While we won’t be going all-out with a smudgy black affair, we’ll be trying a peach perfect version using the POP Beauty Eyeshadow Palette (take a look at our tutorial here!). To ensure that whatever look you’re going for lasts, don’t forget to start with an eye primer – Benefit’s Stay Don’t Stray is A-MAZING and it doubles up as an under-eye concealer – and finish with a water-resistant mascara formula like Laura Mercier’s Long Lash Mascara.

DO TRY A STAIN

A glossy bold lip probably isn’t the best idea if a hot day can cause things to get a little sweaty, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with colour in the heat! Fight the smudge with theBalm® cosmetics Stainiac in Beauty Queen which will add a pop of raspberry pink to your lips and cheeks, without threatening to go walkabouts as soon as the temperature rises.

DON’T MISS OUT ON A BIT OF POWDER!

Guarantee that you set your handiwork and keep things well and truly in place for the long-haul by dusting a face powder, like this one from Lord & Berry, across your face – concentrating on your forehead and T-zone. It blurs fine lines and keeps oil at bay so you your complexion will stay looking fresh whatever the weather.
