We’re excited to have Tatler’s Executive Retail Editor Mariella Tandy kicking things off – stylish and so friendly, Mariella was raised in England but studied at NYU before joining Conde Nast in New York. Now back in London, Mariella is a key player at Tatler, founder of designer vintage resale site WardrobeConnect.com and currently expecting a baby (and has a gorgeous dog called Minnie!) Find out all about her beauty routine here:
My morning begins with some Ayurvedic tea that I am taking as part of The Gentle Birth Method program, with a little green tea in the mixture for a caffeine hit. Every other day, I apply Valmont’s Renewing Pack and wander around the house with it on for 20 minutes or so. In the shower I use Weleda‘s Wild Rose Body Wash – my routine hasn’t changed that much since my pregnancy, as I’ve always favoured products with a natural base. The only addition is copious amounts of oil to prevent stretch marks.
I’m currently using Unite shampoo and conditioner or Phylia de M shampoo and conditioner and I love the Davines hair range. I sleep with the Davines Nourishing Vegetarian Mask in my hair two or three times a week and wash it out in the morning. I let Unite’s Moisture and Shine and a little of their argan oil sink in for about 15 minutes and then dry my hair with an Aveda Paddle Brush and the Parlux. I have zero patience and – unless absolutely necessary – five minutes is my limit with the drier. It usually ends up swirled round in an Alexandre de Paris comb when it’s about 90% dry and ends up with major volume or kinks everywhere, which I don’t really mind – I quite like the ‘wild look’! I wash my hair every three days and use a dry shampoo in between, usually Batiste. If the ends get dry, I spray Unite’s 7 Second Detangler on them.
Once I’m out of the shower, I start my skincare routine. On days I use Valmont’s Renewing Pack, I start with Biologique Recherche P40W which is sort of a toner/exfoliator. On the other days I use Tata Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser. Every day I layer Biologique Recherche Tissulaire Serum and Iribiol Serum – my skin loves these serums as they are more of a water than a cream. In the heat, I move straight to suncream as my skin is so oily it doesn’t need much extra. I love the Sisley SPF50 for face or Somme Institute Facial Sunscreen. On colder days I follow up the serums with either Aurelia Day Cream or Creme VIP 02 from Biologique Recherche. I also love Natura Bisse skincare – the Cure and Oxygen Complex serums are both wonderful and really make a difference to the tone of skin.
I then let everything settle while I start my body routine. I dry body brush with The Body Shop’s Cactus Brush – it’s so great to get everything moving and helps with toxin drainage. I use Dr Hauschka Deodorant, then Tata Harper’s Body Oil all over my body. I also love Clarins Huile Tonic for my growing bump. It has the most divine smell. Clarins do lots of great products for pregnancy, as do Mama Mio. In the heat I am particularly fond of their leg gel – it really refreshes. If I’m in a rush, Mama Mio’s Tummy Rub is great as it sinks in so quickly and allows me to get dressed immediately. Then back to skincare, as I roll a little of Tata Harper’s Multivitamin Oil under my eyes and pat it gently in, I swear it holds back the eye wrinkles!
I don’t wear much make-up, but I do have a signature look that I don’t often veer from. I use Cover FX Mineral Foundation, then Laura Mercier Bronzer, Laura Mercier cream blush and then a highlighting powder down the central panel of the face. For my eyes I use a Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadow with a brush to line the upper lash line. If I want a more dramatic look then I will do the bottom lashline too. Their range of colours is incredible and stay put all day – I also use this shadow on my eyebrows. They’re super thick and dark anyway, but I love them being as striking as possible. Even with no other make-up, brows really do frame your face. I’m not too loyal to mascaras, but I do love the Origins Brightening one and any of the Chantecaille mascaras. Always black. Then I have a dig around in my bag to find whatever Ilia lipstick or crayon is in there, I also love a lip tint by Tata or RMS and put that on as I’m dashing out the door. I’m conscientious of what I put on my lips as we sort of eat it, so the purer the better. Also, I hate doing my make-up in public. My mother always says that a real lady never does that!
Because of my job I am lucky that I get to try some great treatments and spas, I’ve adopted some of them into my must-do routine. For fast pedicures I go to the Chelsea Farmers Market Nail Salon– they do amazing pedis for a reasonable price and they are so fast. The Hand And Foot Spa on Fulham Road is the ultimate indulgence and Neville Hair & Beauty on Pont Street also does great pedi. Debbie Thomas and her girls are the best for anything to do with laser hair removal and the only person for waxing is Arezoo Kaviani and her assistant Lyria. Not only are they lovely people but their waxing is unlike any other and less painful!
For a haircut and colour I see Michaeljohn at Aldo Coppola. They use henna to colour and it leaves my hair so soft and shiny and natural looking. After years of experimenting, I’ve decided I like my natural colour best, so he’s helping me get back there and is also the only hairdresser who actually listens when I say I only want 3cm off! I don’t love visiting the salon for blow dries, the only person who I totally trust as he does it so quickly is Michaeljohn – or Nando or Jack at Neville. For an indulgent massage, I love Pure Massage as they do what it says on the box. A lady called Danuta comes to my home and does a wonderful 90 minute bespoke facial that has lymphatic drainage, major amounts of massage and everything in between.
Reflexology and acupuncture are both wonderful treatments, especially while pregnant. Paolo Lai is incredible for reflexology and Ross Barr is a miracle worker with Acupuncture. I hate gyms so stay fit by walking or cycling everywhere and doing regular Pilates classes at Heartcore – in just a few weeks it does amazing things to your body. I also do lots of yoga either at Triyoga or at home. For any nutrition questions, Petronella Ravenshear at Chelsea Nutrition is great. There isn’t one problem she can’t help with.
My evening routine always involves a bath – usually with Aromatherapy Associates products or Wakaya Ginger which I put in juices, tea and a bath if I need revitalising. I love Epsom Salts too. I might use the Somme Institute face mask or a homemade mask with coconut oil once a week. Then, more Tata Harper Body Oil and a face cleanse with my Clarisonic and whatever cleanser is to hand. Since I started wearing make-up I have been using Bioderma Crealine to remove it. Depending if it’s summer or winter I will use the Biologique Recherche serums again followed by Aurelia nightcream and a Sisley eye cream. Then Tata Harper Aromatic Roll On Bedtime Treatment on my wrists, a couple of magnesium tablets and I am off to sleep.
